Learn to Type

Practise typing at your own pace — no clock, no rush! Type what you see. Green letters are right; if a letter turns red, use Backspace and try again. Learn the home keys, then words, then sentences.

💡 Tip: rest your fingers on the middle row (A S D F … J K L) — these are the home keys. Look at the screen, not your hands, and your speed will grow!

Writing (like Word)

Apps like Microsoft Word help you write and make your words look nice. Type in the box, then use the buttons to change how it looks — just like a real writing app!

💡 Real apps like Word also let you save your work, print it, and check your spelling. You learn save and files in the Computer Basics tab!

✅ Challenge: write a short letter to a friend. Make the greeting bold, choose a nice colour, and centre your name at the end.

Numbers (like Excel)

A spreadsheet keeps numbers in little boxes called cells. Cells sit in rows (numbers 1, 2, 3…) and columns (letters A, B, C…). So the box in column B, row 2 is called B2. The computer can add, average and compare them for you with a formula.

Column A is the day, column B is how many goats. Type numbers in column B and watch the formulas work!

The grown-up formulas for this are: =SUM(B1:B5), =AVERAGE(B1:B5), =MAX(B1:B5), =MIN(B1:B5). The computer does the maths for you!

Spreadsheets can turn numbers into a chart so you can SEE them. Your goats each day:

2. Market shopping list

A spreadsheet can multiply too! Type the price and how many you buy. The Cost box fills in by itself (price × many), and you see the total to pay. Change any number and watch everything update!

Here the Cost box uses =Price×Many and the total uses =SUM. This is exactly how shopkeepers use a spreadsheet!

Turn it on, turn it off — and look after it

Before you save or type, you must know how to start a computer or tablet, stop it properly, and keep it safe. In many schools one tablet is shared by the whole class — so caring for it matters!

Starting and stopping

💡 Always shut down properly (do not just pull the charger). It is like closing the door gently instead of slamming it. And charge the battery so it is ready for the next child.

💡 A shared tablet must last for MANY children. If everyone takes care of it, everyone gets to learn!

Computer Basics — saving, files & folders

When you make something on a computer (a story, a picture, a list), you must save it — or it is lost when the computer turns off! Saved work becomes a file, and files live inside folders. Let's learn how it works.

Key words

💡 Save keeps your work in the SAME file (do it often!). Save As makes a NEW file with a new name — handy to keep the old one too.

Try it: save a file into a folder

Pretend you just wrote a story. Give your file a name, choose a folder to keep it in, and press Save. (This is a safe pretend computer — nothing leaves this page.)

💡 Good folder names help you FIND things later (like ‘School’, ‘Pictures’, ‘Games’). A tidy computer is easy to use — just like a tidy room!

A password is a secret word that keeps your things safe — like the key to your home. A strong one is long and mixes letters, numbers and signs. Type one (not a real one!):
